Shop owner Katherine Lile greets you with a big smile as you enter her inviting shop in the big yellow house in the heart of downtown Blowing Rock, NC. Katherine and her family happily returned last fall to the mountains of western North Carolina where she had spent much of her life.
Katherine’s shop is also her studio where she creates custom quilts and rope baskets, totes, and purses. She has always been a “craftsy” person, having been introduced to quilting at an early age by her mother.
The selection of quilting fabrics is small but special. The emphasis is more on the unusual and American made collections from manufacturers not seen in the average quilt shop. An example is the bolt Katherine is holding in the photo above that features retro kitchen ovens. How cool is that!
The shop is indeed Katherine’s studio, and when not helping customers, she stays busy at her machine producing quilts and rope items.
In addition to her own quilts, baskets, and banners, Katherine’s shop offers quality items handcrafted by local artisans. Examples are goats milk soaps, screen printed tea towels, and candles. She is passionate about supporting her fellow local crafters. Periodically she hosts Makers Markets at The Mountain Thread Company showcasing local and regional artists, craftsmen, and makers.
The beginnings of a new basket! Katherine uses 100% cotton roping from a North Carolina manufacturer. She does retail the roping for anyone who would like to give rope basket making a try.
Handy catch-all baskets attractively displayed on an old chair with the seat woven from Katherine’s roping. I am guessing she did the weaving herself.
I loved this knotted “button” Katherine uses to embellish and finish some of her baskets. I purchased a small basket to use as a catch-all for bobbins, etc. alongside my machine. And my friend Maggie had Katherine make her a basket using purple thread to toss her watch and rings into when she takes them off.
Katherine is a delightful person. I had a great time visiting with her and checking out her creations as well as those of other local craft makers. Blowing Rock is a neat town. If you are ever in the area, be sure and spend some time there and include a stop at The Mountain Thread Company. Check out her website to learn more about her, her craft, and the shop.
