The bright orange color and unusual shape of the leaves of a Sassafras tree  along the Foothills Parkway of Smoky Mountain Natl. Park caught my eye.  Sassafrases are known for their fragrance and flavor and have a long history of medicinal uses.   The roots have the smell of root beer and they were one of the primary plants used in making traditional root beer.
