The early home of Andrew Johnson, the 17th President of the United States.
Johnson’s father died at an early age and Andrew’s impoverished mother apprenticed Andrew and his younger brother to a tailor. Johnson was making his living as a tailor when he lived in this house in Greeneville, TN with his wife and five children. He and his wife were married by a cousin of Abraham Lincoln’s and he ultimately became Lincoln’s Vice President. His tailor shop became a meeting place for locals to discuss politics and Johnson eventually entered into politics himself.
